PBIS
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports
PBIS is a systems approach that emphasizes:
- Team-based planning and problem solving
- An instructional approach to behavior and classroom management
- Active administrator support and participation
- Long-term action planning
- Establishment of staff commitment
2018-2019 is Manteno Elementary's seventeenth full year of implementing Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). PBIS allows school-wide discipline to be centered around school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Instead of using a patchwork of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as hallways, restrooms).
Building-wide and in-classroom systems are in place to not only teach students appropriate behaviors, but also reward those who exhibit these behaviors. Of course, even with the best incentive systems and clearest rules, student behaviors result in the need for disciplinary actions from time to time. Emphasis is directed toward developing and maintaining safe learning environments where teachers can teach and students can learn.
We have previously been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education demonstrating implementation at both the Universal and Secondary phases
