As volunteers our goals are to preserve Kankakee County’s most beautiful spots for future generations while also teaching adults and children how they can conserve energy, recycle, and live an environmentally friendly lifestyle. The club meets monthly before school. Students can get information in Google Classroom, the join code is tceciy3. Students can sign up to get notifications in StudentSquare through Google Classroom. National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) at Manteno High School is a longstanding tradition that recognizes and encourages academic achievement and ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership. It is an active organization that meets regularly and is involved in school service and community service projects.
Selection of National Honor Society members takes place in the fall of the junior or senior year. All students who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 4.50/5.00 at the beginning of their junior or senior year are invited to apply for membership by filling out an application reflecting involvement in student's activities, ways they have demonstrated leadership, and previously completed community service hours (minimum of 15 hours are required). While both school and community activities are evaluated, emphasis is placed on school involvement and leadership. It is important, therefore, that students are actively involved and demonstrate leadership in Manteno clubs, sports and activities in order to be selected for membership.
All MHS faculty have access to each student’s application, and they have an opportunity to provide insight regarding each applicant’s scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The Faculty Council then reviews data from the staff and determines selection based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Candidates who receive the endorsement of the faculty council are invited to become members of NHS. Once students accept membership into NHS, the expectation is that they will continue to uphold the high standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character that the organization embodies through their academic achievements, their active membership in chapter events, and their own volunteering connections.
Requirements:
- Scholarship: To apply students must have a minimum GPA of 4.5/5.0 and then must maintain that if they become a member.
- Character: Students must exhibit character in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
- Leadership: Students must have leadership experience in some form whether its in a school activity or a community organization or activity.
- Service: Students must have a minimum of 15 community service hours when they apply for membership. Students must complete a minimum of 20 service hours each year they are an NHS member.
